I keep hearing interviews from Zuckerberg on his “Damage Tour” … referring to Facebook as a “community” he intends to “fix”. I think we’re fooling ourselves when we downplay the obvious. 2.2 billion monthly active users is no longer a “community”. It’s an online culture that reflects an increasingly unstable world culture. The dichotomy between the two no longer exists, because while culture is shaping Facebook… Facebook is also shaping our culture. As long as this remains true… Facebook cannot be fixed… and if ol’ Mark tells you differently…. he’s either full of shit or deluding himself. I believe this particular model of social networking is a failed experiment; something potentially good that has gone horribly wrong and detracts from the real world more than it enhances it.
