Free As A Bird – Cleanup – Extended Remix #4

Details

I went back to a digital copy of John’s demo cassette… then I spent 2 hours cleaning, de-noising and, using AI, I matched (as closely as possible) the EQ settings that Paul and George used on their microphones when they did their vocal tracks in 1994… so that John, Paul and George’s vocal tracks blended more cohesively together. Then I proceded to de-mix the master recording of the session using Demucs 4. Just prior to remixing the master, I ran John’s cassette recording through Frequency Recovery software (SRS) in order to widen the spectrum of the vocals which were very thin and full of dropouts. Finally I repaired as many of those dropouts as I could and then re-synced John’s cleaned-up vocal track into the Beatles master.  Finally, as suggested by several members of a Beatles Facebook group that I belong to… I lowered the drums in volume just prior to John’s vocal track coming into the mix.  This is, no doubt, NOT the final mix…. but rather a quick mix done exclusively for that group as an example of what is possible, in terms of cleaning up John’s demos, which, towards the end of his life… were done quickly and with very inexpensive equipment.  It is available for download in higher quality MP3 below.
