ASP Podcast – Buddy Holly – One Year In Clovis – The Demos In Stereo

Project History:

De-mixing and cleaning all the individual tracks for this collection began in April, 2024. Mastering was completed June 1st. What you’re listening to is the undubbed original demo’s, plus the bonus track… the overdubbed version of Bo Diddley, remixed.

The Master Tapes – A Brief History:

The tapes could be described as “experimental”, in that they were never intended to be an official release… and Norman Petty, along with Buddy, played extensively with the effects of the day, particularly sound-on-sound, or analog delay via tape. You can gather from hearing them that Buddy was searching for a sound while, at the same time, Mr. Petty was trying to figure out the best way to record him. There were times when, in the middle of the take, the effects overtook the recording, being applied far too harshly.  Levels would drop out or raise by up to as much as  5db on instruments…so the balance was never quite maintained throughout many of the tracks.

What We’ve Done:

Using AI de-mixing technology, we’ve reduced the hiss, greatly. Not only have we separated and cleaned each individual track (vocals, drums, bass, etc.), we have also stemmed the original studio effects (Sound-On-Sound, Echo, Reverb) and remixed those into the stereo spectrum for a very rich, natural sounding end-product. We’ve stemmed the effects separately and re-applied them evenly… and balanced the instruments with each other throughout each track.  Finally, all tracks were remixed and mastered in true stereo.
