Brian Costelli I believe he said it's a Mara JH-24 2" 24 track refurb from roughly '86-'87(ish). Recently serviced... record heads replaced... calibrated... but NO remote or cable-connect to the main desk. He's asking $7,500.00.
Kelly Lassiter Brian I'm not saying the man is lying on purpose but that's definately not from 1986 or '87. The faux wood veneer that basically covered the fiber wood was only on the medium-grade units from about 1981 - '84. They're not bad units at all. Frequency response is the same and S/N ratio is only slightly higher. But that's not a $7,500 unit. It's more like a $4-5,000 unit, fully serviced.
David Orwig @Kelly - I would be more in the $2,000 range and then only if I had a Dolby or DBX outboard box that I could wire into the preamp BEFORE the main board... which I don't have <LOL> because we're currently living in a one-bedroom and my life is in a storage unit. You have to understand, my main work is all digital... I only use analog gear for mixdowns to warm up the sound a little at the mastering stage. I would use this unit maybe 2 or 3 times a year. BRIAN... on the other hand... would be doing work on this puppy WEEKLY, I would imagine.
Brian Costelli Kel, Thank you for the info. I'm still interested in it, but there are a few others out in the wild that I would feel just as comfortable with. David, would I need a DBX outboard specifically for this unit given the S/N ratio being slightly higher, or os that a personal preference?
David Orwig Brian - Dude, that unit would be completely fine as it is, assuming he's done the restoration properly. Most engineers of the day didn't use Dolby on those units, especially at 30ips. Audiomation didn't, the whole time I was there during the period they were still analog. I think Seawind used something similar to this because they were mobile and this one is decidedly smaller to fit in their van... plus it had the advantage of being MUCH more lightweight than the metal framed Studers and such. At that pricepoint, for what you want to use it for... nahhh... screw the noise reduction. I hope you have a good source for tape, though.
Yo!
David Orwig HOLY SHIT! Ummm... yeah, I could never record there. I'm sorry, but that desk is just TOO SMALL! I don't think there's enough inputs! <LOL> DUDE!! I only need HALF of this to function. The other half would be nothing but a place to lay my pizza boxes!!
Brian Costelli I know man. She's a beautiful lady but she's wide. When Jesse saw it for the first time he said he would have to hop a bus in order to reach the other end of it.
David Orwig It would be a long bus ride! Rush hour must be murder! "Sorry, I'm late, Brian... we hit traffic at Track 37!"!
